Two Congos
Mostly people get confused about Congo. Basically there are two Congos which people use interchangeably. But both are different independent countries. One is Democratic Republic of Congo and other Republic of Congo.
1. Democratic Republic of Congo
Continent
Both are located in the continent of Africa.
Capital
1. Capital of Democratic Republic of Congo is Congo Kinshasa.
2. Capital of Republic of Congo is Congo Brazzaville.
European Colony
Both were European colonies until 1960. In Berlin Conference of 1881, the African continent was divided between the European Powers. Congo was divided into French Congo and Belgian Congo (in 1908). In the beginning, Belgian Congo was a Free State privately owned by King Leopold 2 of Belgium and was a Corporate State until 1908.

Congo Horrors
It refers to the horrific period of the tyrant King Leopold 2 of Belgium. More than 10 million Africans were murdered in his rule from 1885 to 1908.

Independence
Both gained independence on 30 June, 1960.
Congo Crises
The flames of crises intensified with the arrest and murder of first democratically elected Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. Later power was seized by Mobutu Sese Seko. Backed by the US and Belgium, he established a military rule in the Democratic Republic of Congo and changed it's name into Zaire in 1971.

Cold War
During Cold War, the Republic of Congo had close ties with the Soviet Union.
The People's Republic of the Congo was established by Alphonse Massamba Dèbat in 1969.

While Zaire was on the side of Capitalist Bloc.

Both Zaire and People's Republic of Congo came to an end in the 1990s with fall of dictatorship in Zaire and collapse of Communism in PRC.
